Italian National Park
The Convent of San Colombo in Barisciano is placed on a strategic position, it is on the slant of Mo
nte Asprino 1700 metres above the level of the sea. The convent is encircled with a blooming vegetation of oaks, hazels and black pines which offers a further reason for visiting and staying in this place.
It was inevitable that this charming, mystic and legendary place attracted the attention of several ec
clesiastics, even though at first a hermitage was built before the church and the convent. Today the “San Colombo Tourist Centre”, is a restored structure with up-to-date services. The “San Colombo Tourist Centre” is placed at an altitude of 1088m form the level of the sea in the middle of the Abruzzo National Park. Several Guests activities are offered like climbing, horse riding and mountain bike excursions; in Winter it is also possible to do cross-country and downhill skiing.
The Food
In some ways, Abruzzese cuisine is the undiscovered treasure of Italian gastronomy. While tourists rhapsodize over Tuscan cuisine and Italians wax poetic over Emilian cuisine, few have truly delved into the flavors of Abruzzo’s kitchen. Abruzzese cooks are masters at turning simple ingredients (perhaps a handful of freshly plucked beans from the garden plot, gleaming black mussels, golden noodles) into glorious feasts.
The food in the Monastery is exquisite. Wonderful local dishes are complemented by local and national wines and all of this comes at really good value, with a sumptuous meal.
